Gold Coins vs Sweeps Coins: What's the Difference?
Gold Coins (GC) are the play-for-fun currency at sweepstakes casinos: you get them free or buy them in packages, and they can never be cashed out. Sweeps Coins (SC) are promotional coins given away free, including as a bonus with Gold Coin packages. After playing them through once, SC can be redeemed for prizes, usually at 1 SC = $1.
Key facts
- 1 Sweeps Coin usually redeems for $1. Gold Coins have no cash value at all.
- Sweeps Coins must be played through at least once (1x) before you can redeem them.
- Cash redemption minimums are typically 50–100 SC; gift cards can start around 10 SC.
- Your first redemption needs ID verification: a photo ID and proof of address.
- Unused Sweeps Coins often expire, commonly within 30–180 days.
- As of July 2026, sweepstakes casinos can't operate in 14 US states, including California and New York.
You land a monster win, open the redeem page, and… nothing. Welcome to the Gold Coin trap. Every sweepstakes casino runs two currencies side by side, and only one of them can ever leave the site as cash. Mix them up and you're playing for bragging rights. Get it straight and you always know what you're playing for.
What are Gold Coins?
Gold Coins (GC) are the house's play money. You get a pile when you sign up, more every day you log in, and bigger piles in the coin packages. Win or lose, none of it touches your wallet, because Gold Coins can't be cashed out, sold or sent to a friend.
Think arcade tokens. Great for testing a new slot or joining a tournament for fun. Worth exactly zero at the redeem desk.
One thing trips people up. When a sweepstakes casino says "buy coins", Gold Coins are what you're buying. That's the product. Any Sweeps Coins in the package come along as a free extra.
What are Sweeps Coins?
Sweeps Coins (SC) are the promotional currency, and the only coins that can turn into a prize. Some sites give them their own name (Stake.us calls them "Stake Cash"), but they work the same way everywhere: you switch to sweeps mode, play, and whatever SC you end up with can be redeemed.
You never buy SC directly. They show up as a sign-up bonus, as daily login rewards, in social media giveaways, through mail-in requests, and as a free bonus stapled to Gold Coin packages. At the redeem desk, 1 SC is usually worth $1. The minimum you need before you can redeem differs by brand: Sweepstakes Casino Rules Compared compares them from the operators' own rules.
The amount you need before you can cash out is not the same everywhere. Here is the minimum cash redemption for each brand whose own rules we have read:
Read from each operator's own rules between Oct 2, 2026 and Nov 2, 2026. Brands that don't publish a cash minimum are left out.
The catch? There are two. SC has to be played through at least once (1x) before it counts as redeemable, and every site sets a minimum balance before it pays out.
Gold Coins vs Sweeps Coins side by side
| Gold Coins (GC) | Sweeps Coins (SC) | |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Play for fun | Play for a chance at prizes |
| Can you buy them? | Yes, in packages (optional) | No; free, or a bonus with GC packages |
| Cash value | None | Usually 1 SC = $1 at redemption |
| Redeemable? | Never | Yes, after 1x playthrough and the site minimum |
| Typical free amounts | Big batches at sign-up and daily | Small amounts, often 0.2–5 SC at sign-up |
| Expiry | Rarely matters | Often 30–180 days if unused |
| ID check needed? | No | Yes, before the first redemption |
Why do sweepstakes casinos use two coins?
It comes down to US sweepstakes promotion rules. A sweepstakes has to be free to enter, which is why "no purchase necessary" is printed on every one of these sites. So the operators sell Gold Coins for fun and hand out Sweeps Coins as the free promotional entry.
That's also why every sweepstakes casino has to give you free ways to get SC: daily bonuses, social promos, and a mail-in alternative method of entry (AMOE), where you send a written request and they send back free Sweeps Coins. Slow? Yes. Free? Also yes. Every free route, with real amounts, is in How to Get Free Sweeps Coins Without Buying.
Not every state buys this setup. Since 2025, a wave of states has banned online sweepstakes casinos outright. The current list is further down.
Sweepstakes vs Social vs Real-Money Casinos compares this two-coin model with social and real-money casinos.
How do you redeem Sweeps Coins?
The routine is the same at every big brand:
- Get verified early. Upload a photo ID and proof of address, and finish any phone or selfie check.
- Open the Redeem page in sweeps mode and check your redeemable balance. Only played-through SC counts.
- Pick your prize: cash by bank transfer, debit card or (at some sites) crypto, or a gift card where offered.
- Enter the amount and confirm. The payout account has to be in your own name.
- Wait for approval. Gift cards can land within hours to a few days; bank transfers usually take 1–7 business days.
What the minimum means in real life
Say you grab 2 SC at sign-up, play them through, and ride a good run up to 60 SC. Nice. But at a site with a 75 SC cash minimum, you're still 15 short. The minimum matters as much as the balance, so check it before you pick where to play.
| Brand | Cash minimum | Gift card minimum |
|---|---|---|
| Crown Coins | 50 SC | Not offered |
| McLuck, PlayFame, SpinBlitz | 75 SC | 10 SC |
| Most other sweepstakes casinos | 100 SC | 10–50 SC |
Figures as reported by RG.org on 2026-09-28. Minimums change, so check the Redeem page of the site you actually use.
For one brand's exact minimums, redemption methods and speeds, see Modo Casino Free SC. For 17 casinos side by side, see How to Redeem Sweeps Coins for Cash.
Playing your SC through so they become redeemable is what players call washing, and Sweepstakes Casino Washing walks through the math and the risks.
How many Sweeps Coins equal a dollar?
At most sites, 1 Sweeps Coin redeems for $1. So 60 SC is $60, but only if those coins have been played through at least once and your redeemable balance clears the site's minimum. Below the minimum, the coins are worth nothing yet, because the redeem button stays locked. LuckyLand Casino, for example, processes a redemption only when it is worth at least $50, which means at least 50 eligible Sweeps Coins (read from its Sweeps Rules on 2026-10-14).
Caps on payouts are set in dollars, not coins. LuckyLand's, for example, is $10,000 a day. Check the redeem page for the exact rate at the site you use, and use the playthrough calculator to see how many plays a balance needs before it counts.
Can you convert Gold Coins to Sweeps Coins?
No. The two coins are separate balances, and there is no exchange between them. Gold Coins never turn into Sweeps Coins, and they never turn into cash. What you can do is buy a Gold Coin package, which usually comes with a free Sweeps Coin bonus attached. The Sweeps Coins arrive as a promotion, not as a swap, and the same Sweeps Coins are also free through sign-up bonuses, daily rewards and mail-in requests. If a site, a video or a stranger offers to convert your Gold Coins, it is not something the operator's rules describe, so treat it as a red flag.
Where are sweepstakes casinos not available?
As of July 2026, sweepstakes casinos can't legally operate in 14 states:
- New bans passed in 2025–2026 (11): California, Connecticut, Indiana, Louisiana, Maine, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma and Tennessee.
- Blocked under older gambling laws (3): Idaho, Michigan and Washington.
Some of these laws take effect later in 2026, and Where Are Sweepstakes Casinos Legal? lists the law and date for each state. The state checker answers it for your state in seconds. Before you sign up anywhere, check the site's own list of excluded states. Using a VPN to get around it breaks every site's terms and can get your account closed, balance included.
Traps that cost players coins
A win in Gold Coin mode stays Gold Coins forever, so glance at the active currency before every session. It's the most common "wait, where's my money?" moment on any sweeps site.
Expiry is the quiet one. Unused Sweeps Coins often expire within 30 to 180 days, and nobody sends a reminder. Chumba's rules, for example, void them 60 days after your last login. Log in now and then, or redeem once you clear the minimum. Do Sweeps Coins Expire? lists the exact rule at 17 casinos.
Then there's bonus SC you haven't played through yet. It sits in your balance looking like cash, but it isn't redeemable until it's been played once.
And if you do buy Gold Coin packages, treat them like any other entertainment spend: set a budget, and use the site's spending limits if it has them.
Where ReloadRush fits
ReloadRush isn't a sweepstakes casino, and we don't sell or give out Gold Coins or Sweeps Coins. We're a free rewards site. You play free mobile games, try apps and answer quick surveys, and we pay you in crypto. Earnings stay pending for 7 days while advertisers confirm them, then you can cash out in LTC or USDT from $5.
No deposit and no card needed. ReloadRush won't make you rich. It pays for reloads: plenty of players put that crypto toward the Gold Coin packages they'd otherwise pay for out of pocket. Check the FAQ for how offers and payouts work, or sign up free.
Frequently asked questions
Can you cash out Gold Coins?
No. Gold Coins have no cash value and never show up on the redeem page. Only Sweeps Coins can be redeemed for prizes.
How much is 1 Sweeps Coin worth?
At most sweepstakes casinos, 1 Sweeps Coin redeems for $1, once it has been played through at least once and your balance clears the site's minimum.
Do you have to buy Gold Coins to get Sweeps Coins?
No. Sweepstakes casinos have to offer free ways to get Sweeps Coins, like sign-up bonuses, daily login rewards, social media giveaways and mail-in requests. Buying a Gold Coin package is always optional.
Why can't I redeem my Sweeps Coins yet?
Usually one of three things: the coins haven't been played through once, your redeemable balance is under the site's minimum (often 50–100 SC for cash), or your ID check isn't done yet.
Can you convert Gold Coins to Sweeps Coins?
No. They are separate balances with no exchange. A Gold Coin package often includes free Sweeps Coins as a bonus, but you cannot swap one coin for the other.
How many Sweeps Coins do I need to cash out?
It depends on the site. Minimums read from operators' own rules run from 50 SC upward for cash, and Sweeps Coins must be played through first. The rules-compared guide lists them brand by brand.
Is ReloadRush a sweepstakes casino?
No. ReloadRush is a free rewards site: you play free mobile games, try apps and answer surveys, then cash out in LTC or USDT from $5. We don't sell or give out Gold Coins or Sweeps Coins.
